Masticatory Myositis

lcbraun's picture

My wonderful Bodhi has just been diagnosed with Masticatory Myositis. It is a rare disease that effects larger breed dogs, like golden retrievers or labradors as well as shepherds.
He can't open his mouth and the muscles on top of his head are shrinking. It is muscle inflammation of the masseter(jaw) and temporalis(on top of head) muscles. It arises when the immune system inappropriately attacks these 2M muscle fibres. They do not know why this happens!

Please Help!

I'm so happy I found this forum. I'm really hoping someone can give me advice. Here we go and I am sorry this is going to be long-ish...

My landlady is practically "The Dog Whisperer" she is so good with rescues, but her golden doodle has one annoying trait that no amount of training has seemed to cure.

A little background, he was dropped off at a PetSmart when he was about a year old. I'm guessing that led to feelings of abandonment, but my landlady spends all her time with him, even bringing him with her to work so he is constantly in contact with people and allowed to run.

Invisible Fences Harmful?

We are moving and our backyard and front yard is just a small wooded area. Its very different from our big fenced in yard. Ive been watching some animal planet and Victoria Stilwell ( a dog trainer) does not recomend electric invisible fences because they can lead to harmful problems later on. Do they truely lead to problems? I absolutely do not want to harm my doodle and I really need some answers. Please help me.............. Do you think they are ok?

K9 advantix

Well for some of us flea season is around the corner. Just wondering if anyone had side effects or good results using k9 advantix . I hate the thought of using chemicals on my dog but the vet told me it was necessary and safe if used properly.

Any advice for me for our "new" 1.5 year old doodle

Hello! So glad this board exists! Two days ago, we took home a 17 month old FB1 goldendoodle. Her first owners did not feel they were giving her the time and attention she needed so wanted her to go to a new home. Angel has spent a lot of time being in her kennel so she is getting used to a new way of life here since I am a stay at home mom and home the majority of the day. I am a first time dog owner (husband grew up with one, I had cats) so this all is a huge learning experience for me.

Flowers/Shrubs that are bad for dogs

Ok - I need some help. I went to the ASPCA site to see what plants are toxic to dogs and almost everything I have in my yard is on the list. I removed the azalea bushes, but have 10 hydrangea bushes and some hosta in the yard that I would hate to transplant. They say "vomiting, diarrhea, depression." Is it necessary to remove them or does training and spraying with stuff to keep the dog away work?
