Pet Ownership and Responsibility

Pet ownership comes with a big responsibility that many people don't realize. Don't think of a dog as being a toy or something that you can play and have fun with when you're in the mood. They are living, breathing creatures and should be treated as such. Pets deserve to be taken care of properly and handled with love and affection.

Tips for owning a pet responsibly:

• Don't have more animals in your home than you can truly take care of.
• Make sure they have enough room to run and get the exercise they need.
• Dogs should have a fenced in yard where they can run and play safely.
• Have a plan and know how your pet will be cared for when you need to leave home.
• Don't keep your pet coped up in a small crate or fence, this is very damaging to the animal.
• Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise.
• Spend quality time with your pet.

Too often dogs and other pets are hit by cars or hurt in some other way because the owner is not taking their responsibility seriously. If your pet ends up missing, do you go searching for him or her? Do you go to the pet shelters to see if he has been picked up? Do you put out flyers and ask neighbours to be on the lookout or do you just ignore the fact that they're missing?

If you're a pet owner you have a responsibly to give that pet a good life and care for them properly. You chose to bring the pet into your home and now you need to treat them right. Don't be like so many pet owners and neglect your responsibilities instead, spend a little extra time making sure your pet is happy and healthy.
