Chew proof dog beds are your best alternative if you are looking for a dog bed for your ‘mouthy’ Goldendoodle. ‘Mouthy’ dogs love to chew on almost everything and need to be properly trained as to what is acceptable for chewing and what is not. Even though you may have convinced your dog to not chew up the furniture or your shoes, a chew proof dog bed is a very good idea since it would only take seconds for a chewing inclined dog to tear a regular dog bed to shreds.
What are Chew Proof Beds Made From?
Frames for dog beds that are chew proof are most commonly made of one of three materials: poly resin, steel or aluminum.
- Poly resin: Very light weight but very durable and as strong as the chew proof bed frames made of metal. Poly resin bed frames are preferred by owners that wish to move the dog bed from place to place.
- Steel: Quite heavy but extremely durable. Steel bed frames reliably and comfortably support large, heavy dog breeds.
- Aluminum: Durable and strong but cannot support as much weight as steel bed frames. Less expensive than steel framed chew proof beds; perfect for medium sized dogs such as Goldendoodles.
There are a few options that may be used for the fabric component of a chew proof bed such as heavy canvas, vinyl and nylon.
- Vinyl: Vinyl weave material is just like the material used to make costly patio furniture. It allows water to pass right on through with its screen like texture. Very good for water loving dogs and outside situations. Least durable of all chew proof materials and not suggested for use by busy dogs that jump up frequently.
- Nylon: Ballistic nylon is the mid-grade material of the three most commonly used fabrics. Hair does not stick to non-porous nylon; it dries quickly and is easy to clean.
- Canvas: Cordura is a very durable canvas fabric with a waterproof coating. Water does not run through the fabric nut rather, water will form puddles on Cordura. It is not a breathable fabric but it is extremely durable and will stand up to the most rigorous of uses.
What Makes these Beds Chewproof?
The fabric component of a chew proof bed is designed in such a way that a dog cannot get hold of the fabric to chew it. The fabric sides or ends on most chew proof beds are tucked inside the frame where the dog cannot get hold of it to chew. The result is a tough dog bed that is chew proof and looks a lot like a camp cot.
Off The Floor
Since chew proof beds are not a cushion style bed they are generally designed with 6”-9” legs that raise the bed body off the floor for increased comfort.
Can my Goldendoodle Dig a Hole in a Dog Bed that is Chew Proof?
If one of your Goldendoodle’s traits is to be a determined digger, it is possible that over time a hole may result from your dog’s digging even in the most durable of fabrics.
